Tips

1. Ask questions! (10-15 mins)

What are the constraints?

What is the goal of the design?

What are some details and context of the challenge?

What is the success criteria for this project?

What are some of the engineering constraints?

What device are we designing for?

Who are the targeting users?

What are the different types of users? You can pick one type of user to focus on for the remaining steps.

What are some common use cases?

What are their goals?

What are their needs?

What are their pain-points?

What are their interactions with the product/service?

The following step is not so much a question, but more of statements that you output based on the user data and constraints you uncovered.

What assumptions can be made?

(Assumptions are made as you learn about the users. Making specific points an assumption helps to acknowledge that these statements can be validated through research and makes you seem less biased. It also helps to carry the process along.)

2. Ideate (5-10 mins)

For existing products: Sketch out existing user flow to see user touch points and uncover breaks in the flow that you can improve.

For new products: Write down all the steps the user will take to achieve their goal, make it a detailed user journey story.

3. Sketch Ideas (15-20 mins)
